Microsoft has announced the rollout of a new update for Windows 11 for the users which may replace the traditional passwords with the passkeys offered by third-party services such as 1Password. 1Password is a company that has collaborated closely with Microsoft in the recent months.
In a post on November 22, on the official Windows Insider blog, Microsoft confirmed what has been widely anticipated and the swift transition to passwordless authentication is underway. It incorporates support for the third-party passkey providers.
The company also stated that as part of its dedication by Microsoft to a passwordless future, they are introducing API support for third-party passkey providers on Windows. This application programming interface support is important to enable third-party providers with whom Microsoft has been in discussions to add their user bases and security features into the passwordless framework.
While passwords are expected to remain in use for the foreseeable future, Microsoft has also introduced additional measures to boost their security like encrypted password sharing for Edge browser users. However, this latest update related to passwords is significant for the broader acceptance of passkeys as the future standard for improved login security among all the users of Windows 11.
The password management firm 1Password reported that despite encouraging adoption rates for passkeys, there is still some considerable progress to be made before they actually become common for people to use.
While Microsoft facilitates the transition for Windows 11 users, they might not feel prepared to adopt a passwordless approach and utilise a passkey at this specific time. In such cases, it is advised that all the necessary steps are taken to make sure that passwords of users remain as secure as possible.
