Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared in the Bundestag on Wednesday that the cybersecurity and infrastructure in Germany are facing a serious threat from foreign opponents like China and Russia.

The United States in its report on Tuesday night, last week reported that a significant Chinese cyber intrusion which is affecting global telecom providers is ongoing. In addition to this, there have been disruptions which can linked to damage to two undersea fibre-optic cables in the Baltic Sea which has further raised suspicion of sabotage.

The German News Agency DPA in another troubling development reported that the crew of a Russian vessel allegedly fired signal ammunition over the Baltic Sea at a Bundeswehr helicopter.

When Scholz was asked about the recent events, he remarked, “We must exert considerable effort to defend ourselves against such attacks”.  He added that German security agencies also need to strive to investigate as many incidents as they can so that the recurrence could be prevented beforehand.

The head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service recently cautioned that the senior officials within Russia’s Defence Ministry are sceptical about whether NATO countries are going to uphold the mutual defence clause which was outlined in the NATO treaty.

When asked about the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, Scholz emphasized that the decisions cannot be taken over the head of Ukraine, and eventually, it is up to Kyiv to decide its path forward after consulting with its allies and closest friends.

The centre-left leader reflected on his diplomatic efforts including a call with Putin stating that the Russian President has now shown any desire to have a purposeful conversation.
