I’ve always been a bit of a tech enthusiast, so when I first heard about a quick charging solution, I was immediately intrigued by the concept. I mean, who in the world wouldn’t want their phone to be charged quickly?

But, as I researched more about the concept, I realized that there is a lot more than just plugging your phone into a fancy charger.

So, in this read, I’ll be sharing everything that I’ve learned about quick charging. And, how in the 1st quarter of 2023 80% of global smartphone sales were coming from phones with a fast charging solution. (Source: Counterpoint Research)

On top of that, we will also discuss the science behind the quick charging solution along with some fine tips to get the most out of your device’s quick charging capabilities.

Let’s start!

An Overview

So, speaking of my personal experience when I first researched about “what is quick charge?” I learned that it’s a technology that allows your device to charge much faster in comparison to a traditional charging method.

The Role of Voltage and Current in Fast Charging

The Role of Voltage and Current in Fast Charging

When I first started learning about the concept, I was a bit confused about the technical terminology like voltage, current, and wattage. But as I dug deeper, I realized that it’s crucial to understand these concepts in order to understand the real magic behind quick charging.

So, in a simple term, voltage is the pressure that pushes electricity, while current is the average flow rate. So, in order to charge a battery quickly, we need to increase both voltage and current.

Qualcomm Quick Charge Technology

Qualcomm Quick Charge Technology

Qualcomm is the leading company in designing products for the telecommunication industry, and I’ve always been impressed by the Qualcomm’s latest innovations in the mobile industry. And speaking of Qualcomm Quick Charge technology, it is one of the most widely adopted fast charging standards.

With each new generation of quick charger, Qualcomm has been pushing their boundaries to boost their charging speed, allowing us to charge our devices faster than before.

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)

One big concern in the tech world is having different charging standards for each of your devices, it’s really frustrating to have a drawer full of incompatible chargers. And, this is right where a USB power delivery comes to power a wide range of devices. Be it about charging your smartphone, tablet, laptops, and even monitors.

I’ve personally experienced the convenience of USB-PD. As it allowed me to charge all devices by using a single cable and charger. This can be particularly beneficial for the travel enthusiasts, as it can make their travel much more manageable.

Do You Know?

According to the standardization body of USB, the USB PD can offer charging speeds of up to 240W with voltages of up to 48V.

Proprietary Fast Charging Protocols

While the universal standards of USB-PD are great for convenience. Some manufacturers have been developing their own proprietary fast-charging protocols to offer a unique charging solution.

For instance, companies like OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi have their own proprietary charging solution that comes with an impressive charging speed to charge their devices in record time.

The Importance of the Charging Cable

Charging cable, which is often overlooked in the process, often plays a crucial role in fast charging. Where a low-quality or damaged cable car can slow down your charging speed or even damage your device sometimes. And, this is why it is often suggested to opt for a high-quality and certified cable to ensure better performance and durability.

Thermal Management in Quick Charging

Another big concern with the fast charging solution would be managing the overall heat generated by the increased power input. If not managed properly, this excessive heat can damage the battery or reduce its lifespan. This makes thermal management an important aspect of the fast-charging solution.

Well, many companies nowadays are implementing advanced thermal management technology like liquid cooling and intelligent charging algorithms to make sure that their device remains cool to the touch, even after an intense charging session.

Wireless Fast Charging

Wireless charging, which is getting advanced for a very long time now, is also coming up as a viable solution for fast charging. However, it was once a slow and inefficient process but due to the recent advancements, it is now becoming more powerful to charge your device quickly — And all of that without the hassle of cables.

Key Takeaways

  • Quick charging utilizes higher voltages and dynamic current control to deliver faster battery replenishment.
  • Qualcomm’s Quick Charge and USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) are leading technologies in the fast-charging space.
  • Proprietary fast charging protocols from manufacturers offer even faster speeds but may require specific chargers and cables.
  • The charging cable itself plays a critical role in supporting the high voltages and currents required for quick charging.
  • Thermal management is crucial in quick charging to prevent overheating and ensure safety.
  • Wireless fast charging is the future, providing the convenience of cable-free charging with performance that is rapidly catching up to wired solutions.
